Fungal alopecia

What is fungal alopecia? Definition 2023.

Fungal alopecia, or ringworm, usually begins with the formation of a pimple that gradually enlarges and leaves scales on the hair-bearing part. It may spread to the neck and face, with swollen lymph nodes, so you may often feel headaches, some fever or vomiting.

Hair fungus can cause hair loss, which appears as patchy, temporary and reversible as the infection clears, so it is curable.

What causes fungal alopecia?

Fungi multiply in hot, humid areas. Your chance of getting a ringworm infection is higher if you have mild skin or head lesions.

It can be spread in 3 different ways:

  • Person-to-person. Ringworm is usually spread by direct skin-to-skin contact with an already infected person.
  • Tangible things to people. Ringworm can be spread by contact with objects or surfaces that have been touched by a person or can also be from an animal, clothing, towels, hairbrushes, etc.
  • Animals to people. Animals, often as infants, are carriers of ringworm. This includes cows, a horse or a pig. So anyone who caresses them and touches them, can already be infected by this simple way.

Age can also play a predominant role, as for example it is very common in young children who are going to school.

Treatment of fungal alopecia 2023

It is important to keep the area clean and dry and maintain good hygiene. The treatment includes topical preparations to be used, as well as the use of medications such as griseofulvin or itraconazole.
Health specialists indicate that the use of shampoo alone is not sufficient. Avoid contact with animals showing signs of the same infection. In some cases, thanks to the development of an infection, prolonged treatment with corticosteroids and antibiotics is necessary.
Treatment can last from about 3 to almost 9 weeks and should be started as soon as possible to prevent the disease from spreading throughout the body.
The best thing to do is always to go to the doctor, so that he can analyze our case individually and recommend the best solution for this type of baldness.
