What is seborrheic alopecia? Definition 2023.
It is called seborrheic, because it is a condition of premature hair loss that generally affects young adults between 18 and 28 years old, especially in the forehead and hairline areas. The reason, as the name suggests, is linked to increased sebum production, which causes and accelerates hair loss. Symptoms associated with seborrheic alopecia are itching, scalp pain and greasy flakes.
What causes seborrheic alopecia?
The hyperactivity of the sebaceous glands is caused by hormonal imbalance or activity of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase that transforms testosterone into dihydrotestosterone or also called DHT. The amount of transforming enzymes and androgen (testosterone) receptors present in the scalp varies from case to case and affects sebum production. The severity of seborrheic alopecia depends on how the enzymes and receptors are distributed in the scalp.
In male or female individuals, follicle 5-alpha reductase concentrations were significantly higher in the temporal, frontal and longitudinal regions than in the occipital and parietal regions. The difference lies in the number of receptors in the follicles, which are less common in women than in men and therefore less prone to diarrhea and greasy hair. In women, the imbalance can be controlled and is often associated with hormonal and digestive disorders.
Therefore, when hair loss is accompanied by increased sebum secretion, it is not easy to understand that the amount of so-called DHT, is the common cause of the two phenomena and when excess sebum becomes the cause associated with hair follicles.
Also, it can be caused by a seborrheic dermatitis.
Treatment of alopecia due to seborrhea 2023
- Anti-oily shampoo.
- Alternate the shampoo every other day with a neutral shampoo.
- Do not eat greasy food, which will produce more grease on the scalp.
- Always keep your hair clean and oxygenated.
When we manage to eliminate the grease from our scalp, our hair will be oxygenated again and we will recover our lost hair after a few months. But we must always take this special care so that we do not produce excess sebum again, do not eliminate it and have the same problem continuously.
